In 1978, Fiat aims for a second consecutive World Rally Championship title. To reach this goal, the Italian brand entered two drivers: Walter Röhrl, a young talent, and its official driver since 1974, the flying Finn Markku Alén. The start of the season was hotly contested, and only Alén managed two podium finishes. In Portugal, Alén set up a magnificent battle with the Fords. Firstly with Björn Waldegard, then with Hannu Mikkola. In the end, Alén won the rally ahead of his compatriot in the 46th and last special stage of this mixed rally (asphalt and gravel). It was the first victory ( of five ) of the season for the Fiat 131 Abarth. Unsurprisingly, the Italian team clinched another manufacturer's title in 1978.
